Rapid Success — Canoe team wins fourth straight national championship

For the Albion College canoe team, it’s easy to get the best of white water rapids, even with the huge holes, standing waves and water spray.
At the American Canoe Association (ACA) Collegiate Canoe and Kayak Championships held Oct. 9-10 on Tuckasegee River in Dillsboro, N.C., Albion’s canoe team won the national title for the fourth straight year—winning every year since the championships began in 2007.
Accrediting Albion—College conducts self-review
A change in federal accreditation standards is causing Albion College to re-evaluate its preparation of students for post-college life.
The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) will reaffirm the college’s eligibility to dispense federal aid during the 2010-2011 academic year. In preparation for the committee’s visit, Albion put together a 12-member Steering Committee of faculty, students and administration to evaluate the college’s overall effectiveness, said David Seely, professor of physics and committee chair.

Growing Green—Albion students learn art of agriculture
Weeding. Watering. Feeding ripe, juicy tomatoes by hand to the local deer. It’s all part of the process of getting close to the food at the Albion College Student Farm.
Agriculture has been featured in Albion’s year of sustainability, with Joel Salatin, a farmer in Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, as the 2010 Richard M. Smith Common Reading Experience speaker. Salatin addressed Albion’s first-year students on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
Making the Grade—College receives C- on sustainability report card
Going green is in the forecast at Albion College—the 2010-2011 academic year has been dedicated to sustainability as part of the college’s strategic plan.
But last fall, the college received an overall grade of C- for 2010 in the College Sustainability Report Card (CSRC), according to greenreportcard.org. The website compiled evaluations for 332 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada last year using information gathered from a series of surveys completed by schools as well as independent research using public records.
